Dynamips
Dynamips is a Cisco router emulator. It emulates a Cisco 7200, 3600 and 2691 routers. It uses a real Cisco IOS image, downloadable from CCO (www.cisco.com). Dynamips doesn't emulate Catalyst switches or PIX/ASA firewalls. There's a way to have a virtual Ethernet, Frame-Relay or ATM switch between routers, though. Dynamips is publicly available, anyone can download it and use it. It can run on Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Linux. It can run on 32-bit and 64-bit processors. It can run on Intel and AMD processors. Dynamips is written by Christophe Fillot from France. Please don't forget to send him a "thank you" note (mailto:cf@utc.fr).
Cisco 7200 Port Adapters (PA) currently supported:
- C7200-IO-FE and PA-FE-TX
- PA-4E and PA-8E
- PA-A1 ATM Card (A1 is not enhanced, some features aren't supported, for example PPPoA)
- PA-4T+ and PA-8T
- PA-POS-OC3 (only with newer IOS releases)
Cisco 3600 Network Modules (NM) currently supported:
- NM-1E, NM-4E, NM-1FE-TX
- NM-4T
- NM-16ESW

Dynagen
Dynagen, by Greg Anuzelli, is a front-end (written in Python) that makes lab simulation with Dynamips very easy. It uses a network map file and has a very simple to use CLI. CLI can be used to start, stop and telnet to the routers. Don't forget to send a "thank you" note to Greg, either!

ieMentor CCIE Service Provider Workbook Labs
ieMentor CCIE Service Provider Workbook (and ieMentor CCIE Service Provider Bootcamp Labs) can be simulated on Dynamips/Dynagen. We've done an extensive research for the optimized Dynagen configuration of our topology, including what IOS version to use, what settings to use, what features might not be available, and most importantly what specifications your PC/LAPTOP should have.
Details:
- Download ZIP file with IEMENTOR.NET (network map file) and all NVRAM files (containing initial configs) for routers. You have to be our existing Workbook or Bootcamp customer. If your username/password do not work, please contact support@iementor.com.
ieMentor CCIE Service Provider Workbook & Bootcamp Topology
- 14 7206 Routers
- Cisco IOS Release 12.0(32)S5 (Service Provider) c7200-p-mz.120-32.S5.image
You will have to download this IOS image from CCO yourself. This IOS image will give you 99% of features you need to study for CCIE Service Provider. Cisco wants you to use 128Mb of RAM for this image, but you can run your Dynamips routers with 64 RAM. Thanks to this, your Windows/Linux PC will have much better performance than if you were running some 12.3 or 12.4 image that requires 128Mb of RAM on each router.
- Unsupported features on 12.0(32)S5 that you still need to study: PPPoE, DHCP Server, MPLS Cell-Mode VP-Tunnel mode.
- Never try to run ISIS on the interface and modify interface MTU size at the same time. Dynamips will crash!
- Recommended idle-pc value 0x6058b478 (or 0x6065cea4)
PC minimum Hardware Recommendations:
- Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86Ghz (x86_64bit, there is no 32bit equivalent)
Notes: Higher processor is not necessary, unless you want to run other IOS images that require 128MB of RAM
- 2GB RAM (preferrably two 1GB modules)
Notes: 1GB RAM will not be enough, even if you see only around 500MB memory used, performance will be bad.
- Intel D946 GZIS Chipset Motherboard
Notes: You can use other motherboards
- 80GB SATA Harddrive
- 16xDVD drive
- OS: Linux Fedora Core 6 x86_64 (free download)
- You won't find a laptop for under $1400 that can run this topology with full configs.
- ieMentor will soon be offering a pre-built package which includes the PC, CCIE SP Workbook, and Free Support.
Installation instructions:
- Install OS of your choice (Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Linux Fedora Core 6) on the PC or laptop of your choice, but keep in mind the minimum hardware requirements.
- Follow instructions from Dynagen Website on how to install Dynamips and Dynagen. They don't have any instructions on how to install Dynamips/Dynagen on Linux, but if you can use Unix, you will figure it out. Send us an email if you need any help.
- Download dynamips.zip file from our website and unzip [iementor.pre] folder into the [dynagen/labs] folder.
- Download IOS 12.0(32)S5 Service Provider image from CCO (c7200-p-mz.120-32.S5.bin file). You will have to UNTAR/UNZIP it from .bin file to .image file. WinZIP won't work on Windows. Google a Unix-like tar utility for Windows and use it to UNTAR/UNZIP .bin file into .image. Place the c7200-p-mz.120-32.S5.image file into [dynagen/images] folder.
- Open the [dynagen/labs/iementor.pre/iementor.net] file in a text editor and modify this line:
image = /opt/dynagen/images/c7200-p-mz.120-32.S5.image
Specify the correct path to the image file. If you are using Windows, it might looks like this:
\Program Files\Dynamips\images\c7200-p-mz.120-32.S5.image
- Follow dynagen tutorial on how to start this lab
- Try to start all routers (dynagen CLI command "start /all") and after a minute telnet to one of the routers. If performance is bad, you can try to tweak the idle-pc value (refer to dynagen tutorial), otherwise your hardware doesn't meet our minimum specifications.
- Contact us with any questions! Good Luck!
